Shoppable Ads: Formats, Platforms & Examples (2026 Guide)

Shoppable ads are paid ads that pull products straight from your product catalog, showing the item, its live price, and a direct path to buy it. Instead of one static creative sending everyone to your homepage, a shoppable ad shows each person the products most relevant to them, and one tap takes them to that product, or even to checkout inside the app. For Shopify brands they are the engine behind most social and video ad revenue.
Shoppable ads in one line
A normal ad advertises. A shoppable ad sells: it is built from your catalog, shows real products with real prices, and links each one to a place it can be bought.
How shoppable ads work
- Product catalog (feed). Your Shopify products (titles, images, prices, variants, stock, URLs) sync to the ad platform through its Shopify app: Meta Commerce Manager, TikTok Catalog Manager, Google Merchant Center, Pinterest catalogs.
- Tracking events. Your pixel and server-side API send events like ViewContent, AddToCart, and Purchase with product IDs, so the platform knows who looked at what.
- Ad template or creative. You supply a template (carousel, collection, video with product cards) and the platform fills it with products.
- Matching. The algorithm picks which products to show to which person: the exact items they viewed (retargeting) or items people like them tend to buy (prospecting).
- Purchase path. A tap opens your product page, an instant storefront, or native checkout, depending on platform and format.
Because the catalog does the heavy lifting, one campaign can advertise thousands of products, and price or stock changes in Shopify update the ads automatically.
Shoppable ads vs regular ads
| Regular (static) ad | Shoppable ad | |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | One image or video, made by hand | Template filled from your catalog |
| Products shown | Whatever you chose | Personalised per viewer |
| Price and stock | Can go out of date | Live from the feed |
| Landing point | Usually a homepage or collection | The exact product, or in-app checkout |
| Scales to | A handful of hero products | The whole catalog |
| Best at | Storytelling, launches, brand | Retargeting, catalog-wide prospecting, sales |
The strongest accounts use both: brand and creator video to create demand, and shoppable formats to turn it into orders.
Shoppable ad formats by platform
Names and features change often, and not every format is available in every country. Treat this as a map and check each platform's ads help centre for current specs.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)
- Advantage+ catalog ads (formerly dynamic product ads). Carousel, single-image, or collection ads filled automatically from your catalog. The workhorse for retargeting product viewers and cart abandoners, and for broad prospecting.
- Collection ads. A hero video or image on top with products underneath; a tap opens a full-screen Instant Experience that loads fast inside the app.
- Carousel ads with catalog. Up to ten cards, each a product with its own link.
- Advantage+ shopping campaigns. Meta's automated campaign type for ecommerce: you give it creative, catalog, and budget, and it handles targeting and placements across prospecting and retargeting.
- Product tags in Reels and Partnership ads. Run a creator's post as an ad with your product tagged.
Meta catalog ads are where most Shopify brands should start. It's the core of our Meta ads agency work.
TikTok
- Video Shopping Ads. In-feed videos with product cards that link to your site or TikTok Shop listing, and can be generated from your catalog.
- Catalog ads. Automatically created product ads based on your catalog and viewer behaviour.
- GMV Max. TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop sellers, optimising toward shop sales (gross merchandise value) across your own videos, creator affiliate videos, and product cards.
- LIVE Shopping Ads. Push viewers into a live stream where they can buy in real time.
- Spark Ads. Boost organic posts, including creator posts (with their authorisation), keeping the original handle, likes, and comments as social proof.
Google and YouTube
- Shopping ads. Product listing ads on Google Search and the Shopping tab, driven by your Merchant Center feed. The most intent-rich shoppable ad there is.
- Performance Max. One campaign serving your feed across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, and Discover.
- Demand Gen and video with product feeds. Attach your feed to YouTube and Shorts ads so product cards appear beneath the video.
- Shopping ads. Product Pins from your catalog, with price and availability, served to people browsing related ideas.
- Collections ads. A lead image or video with product images underneath.
- Performance+ campaigns. Pinterest's automated campaign options for catalog sales.
Snapchat and others
Snapchat offers dynamic product ads and collection ads from a catalog, useful for younger audiences and retargeting. Amazon, Walmart, and other retail media networks sell shoppable ads too, but those sell your products on their marketplace rather than your Shopify store.
| Platform | Main shoppable formats | Where the sale closes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta | Advantage+ catalog, Collection, Advantage+ shopping | Your Shopify checkout (mostly) | Most Shopify brands; retargeting and prospecting |
| TikTok | Video Shopping, catalog, GMV Max, LIVE, Spark | TikTok Shop or your site | Demo-driven, impulse products; creator-led brands |
| Google / YouTube | Shopping, Performance Max, video with feeds | Your Shopify checkout | Capturing search intent; considered purchases |
| Shopping, collections | Your Shopify checkout | Home, fashion, gifting, planned buys | |
| Snapchat | Dynamic product, collection | Your Shopify checkout | Gen Z audiences, retargeting |

These are typical setups we see work for Shopify brands. They are illustrative patterns, not specific brand case studies.
1. The abandoned-cart carousel
A shopper adds a linen shirt to cart and leaves. Over the next week they see a Meta catalog carousel with that exact shirt first, followed by the matching trousers. The headline pulls the product name; the primary text addresses the hesitation ("Free returns for 30 days"). Audience: added to cart in the last 7 days, excluding purchasers.
2. The UGC-topped collection ad
A skincare brand runs a Collection ad with a 15-second customer video on top ("my routine, three steps") and the three products underneath. Tapping opens an Instant Experience that shows the routine as a bundle. The video sells the result; the catalog makes it instantly buyable.
3. The creator Spark Ad into TikTok Shop
An affiliate creator posts an unboxing that picks up traction organically. The brand gets the creator's Spark Ad code, boosts the post with a product card attached, and every sale goes through TikTok Shop, with the creator earning their affiliate commission. Social proof in the comments does work no brand-made ad can.
4. The Shopping ad for a category search
Someone searches "waterproof hiking boots women". A Google Shopping ad shows the boot, price, star rating, and free-shipping note before they have clicked a single website. Well-written feed titles (brand + product type + key attribute + gender) are what win that placement.
5. The Pinterest seasonal shopping ad
A home décor store runs shopping ads on its autumn range from late summer, when planners start saving ideas, well before the purchase. The ads catch people while they build boards, then retarget them as the season arrives.
How to set up shoppable ads on Shopify
- Clean up your product data. Clear titles, full descriptions, correct variants, GTINs where you have them, and sharp images on plain or lifestyle backgrounds. Every catalog ad is only as good as its feed.
- Install the sales channel apps. Facebook & Instagram, TikTok, Google & YouTube, and Pinterest each have an official Shopify app that syncs your catalog and installs tracking.
- Turn on server-side tracking. Enable Meta Conversions API and TikTok Events API (both available in the Shopify apps) at the highest data-sharing level your privacy policy allows. Browser-only pixels miss a large share of events.
- Build product sets. Group products by margin, category, bestseller status, or price, so you can push profitable items and exclude low-stock or low-margin ones.
- Launch retargeting first. Viewed or added-to-cart but didn't buy. It is the fastest proof the setup works.
- Add prospecting. Broad audiences with catalog ads, or an Advantage+ shopping / Performance Max / GMV Max campaign.
- Layer creative on top. Add video, UGC, and offer frames to your catalog templates rather than relying on plain packshots.
Best practices that move the numbers
- Optimise the feed like a landing page. Put the words people search for in titles. Use supplemental feeds or custom labels to add margin tiers and promotions without touching Shopify.
- Frame your product images. Catalog overlays (price, discount, free shipping, star rating) make a carousel card stand out from organic posts.
- Lead with video. Collection and catalog ads with a product-in-use or UGC video on top usually outperform image-only versions. Test it.
- Exclude recent buyers from retargeting, or cross-sell to them with complementary product sets instead.
- Watch frequency. A small retargeting pool served the same carousel every day burns out fast. Cap it, refresh creative, or widen the window.
- Fix the page they land on. A shoppable ad can only deliver a visitor; the product page has to convert them. Shoppable video on the page helps. See the best shoppable video apps for Shopify.
- Judge on profit. Set ROAS targets from contribution margin, not habit. Use our break-even ROAS guide.
How to measure shoppable ads
Every platform takes credit for as many sales as its attribution window allows, so the platforms' totals add up to more than your Shopify revenue. Keep three views side by side:
- In-platform ROAS and CPA, for day-to-day optimisation inside one channel.
- Blended metrics, total Shopify revenue divided by total ad spend (MER), and new-customer acquisition cost, to judge the whole programme.
- Incrementality tests, such as geo holdouts or platform conversion-lift studies, when you need to know whether a channel adds sales that would not have happened anyway. Retargeting in particular often looks better in-platform than it is.
Common mistakes
- Letting the feed rot. Disapproved products, out-of-stock items still advertised, and wrong prices quietly waste budget.
- Only running retargeting. It looks great in-platform but can't grow a brand; it only harvests existing demand.
- Plain white-background packshots everywhere. They look like ads and blend together. Mix in lifestyle and video.
- Advertising your whole catalog equally. Push margin-healthy bestsellers; exclude items that lose money after ad costs.
- Ignoring the post-click experience. Slow pages and a clunky mobile checkout undo good ads. Checkout optimisation often pays back faster than more spend.
Shoppable ads and social commerce
Shoppable ads are the paid half of social commerce. The organic half is product tags, TikTok Shop, YouTube Shopping, and the Shop app. For the full picture, platform by platform, read our pillar guide to social commerce for Shopify, and if TikTok is your next channel, follow how to connect TikTok Shop to Shopify.

What are shoppable ads?
Shoppable ads are paid ads built from your product catalog. They show real products with live prices and let viewers tap through to the product or buy in the app. Examples include Meta Advantage+ catalog ads, TikTok Video Shopping Ads, Google Shopping ads, and Pinterest shopping ads.
What is the difference between shoppable ads and dynamic product ads?
Dynamic product ads are one type of shoppable ad: ads filled automatically from your catalog based on what someone viewed. Meta now calls them Advantage+ catalog ads. Shoppable ads is the broader term and also covers collection ads, shopping ads, and video ads with product cards.
Which platforms offer shoppable ads?
Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, Google and YouTube, Pinterest, and Snapchat all offer catalog-based shoppable ad formats. Retail media networks like Amazon offer them too, but for sales on their marketplace.
Do I need a product catalog to run shoppable ads?
Yes. Shoppable ads are powered by a product feed. For Shopify stores, the official Facebook & Instagram, TikTok, Google & YouTube, and Pinterest apps sync your products to each platform automatically.
Are shoppable ads better than regular ads?
They do a different job. Shoppable ads are usually more efficient at turning interest into orders, especially for retargeting and large catalogs. Regular brand and creator ads are better at creating new demand. Most profitable accounts run both.
How much do shoppable ads cost?
Shoppable ads are bought in the same auctions as other ads, so you pay per impression or click at market rates. There is no extra charge for the format itself, though TikTok Shop sales also carry a referral fee and any affiliate commission.
What is a good ROAS for shoppable ads?
There is no universal number. A good ROAS is one above your break-even ROAS, which depends on your gross margin, shipping, and fees. Retargeting usually shows higher ROAS than prospecting, but part of those sales would have happened anyway.
Can I run shoppable ads on Instagram without an Instagram Shop?
Yes. Catalog ads on Instagram need a Meta catalog and pixel connected to your ad account, which the Facebook & Instagram app for Shopify sets up. Product tagging in organic posts needs Instagram shopping features to be enabled for your account.
