About our Shopify CRO practice

CRO for Shopify is a different sport

  • Shopify Plus Partner

    Checkout-level testing

  • San Francisco, USA

    In-house team

Conversion is a Shopify CRO agency headquartered in San Francisco. We run conversion optimization exclusively on Shopify and Shopify Plus, which matters because Shopify CRO has platform-specific physics: theme architecture constrains what you can test, apps fight each other for the same DOM, and the checkout is only experimentable through Shopify Plus checkout extensibility, the surface our Shopify checkout optimization work focuses on. Generic CRO agencies recommend. We build in Liquid and React with our Shopify development team, ship the variant, and measure it.

Every engagement runs on the same loop. Research (analytics, heatmaps, session recordings, review mining, user tests) produces a prioritized hypothesis backlog, each hypothesis becomes a designed, built, statistically powered experiment (see A/B testing vs multivariate testing), winners deploy permanently, and losers teach us something. The dominant friction point differs by category: sizing uncertainty in fashion, shipping clarity in food and beverage, and in beauty a heavy reliance on reviews and UGC, where shoppable video apps for Shopify can carry the social proof. Comparing options? See our breakdown of the best Shopify CRO agencies, including pricing and red flags. We benchmark against conversion rate benchmarks for your category and report incremental revenue per experiment, the CRO metric your P&L can feel.

We judge every test on revenue per visitor (RPV), not conversion rate alone, because a test that lifts conversion while cutting AOV loses money. Here is what the maths looks like. A store with 100,000 monthly sessions, a 2.0% conversion rate and an $80 AOV takes $160,000 a month, or $1.60 per visitor. Lifting conversion to 2.2% (a 10% relative lift, which is 0.2 points) at the same AOV adds $16,000 a month, about $192,000 a year, from traffic you already pay for. That is the number a CRO programme has to beat its own cost against.

Why most Shopify CRO fails

The three ways stores leave conversion on the table

We've audited hundreds of Shopify funnels. The pattern is remarkably consistent.

  • Opinion-led redesigns instead of experiments

A founder or agency 'refreshes' the PDP based on taste, conversion moves (nobody knows which direction, because there was no test), and the cycle repeats. Redesigns without experimentation destroy as many winners as they create. Everything we ship runs as a measured test first.

  • Testing trivia while the checkout leaks

Button-color tests on a store whose mobile LCP is 4.8 seconds and whose checkout hides express payments below the fold. We sequence by expected impact: speed and checkout friction first, micro-copy last. On Plus, checkout extensibility makes the biggest leak directly testable.

  • Statistical malpractice

Tests called at 55% 'confidence', peeked at daily, stopped the moment a line crosses. Half the 'wins' most agencies report are noise. We pre-register sample sizes, run to power, and report the revenue effect with confidence intervals, losers included.

Our CRO process

The experimentation loop that compounds

  1. Step 01

    Audit & benchmark

Full funnel audit, category benchmarking, and speed diagnosis. You get the prioritized experiment backlog with projected revenue impact per test before any retainer starts.

  2. Step 02

    Fix the floor

The first 30 days ship the non-controversial wins: speed, checkout friction, express payments, PDP clarity. These need engineering more than they need tests.

  3. Step 03

    Test the ceiling

The A/B program starts: designed variants, pre-registered stats, 2 to 6 concurrent tests depending on traffic. Winners deploy permanently the week they validate.

  4. Step 04

    Compound & expand

Validated learning feeds the next backlog. AOV programs, checkout extensibility tests (Plus), and personalization layer in. Reporting shows cumulative incremental revenue, the number that justifies the program.

Frequently asked

Shopify conversion rate optimization questions

Who is Shopify CRO right for, and how much traffic do we need?
A full A/B testing programme pays off from roughly 30,000 monthly sessions, or about 30 to 50 orders a day, and is strongest for brands doing $1M+ a year on Shopify or Shopify Plus. Between 10,000 and 30,000 sessions we run research-led CRO: session replay, user tests, and sequential tests of bigger changes. Under 10,000 sessions, a one-off CRO audit and the fixes it surfaces (speed, PDP clarity, shipping messaging, express payments) is the better spend, and we will tell you so.
What is Shopify conversion rate optimization?
Shopify conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the systematic process of increasing the percentage of store visitors who purchase. It combines quantitative research (GA4, heatmaps, session recordings, funnel analysis), qualitative research (user testing, polls, review mining), and statistically rigorous A/B testing on the templates that matter most: product pages, collection pages, cart, and checkout. On Shopify Plus, checkout extensibility opens the checkout itself to experimentation, the highest-impact surface in the funnel.
What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?
Across ecommerce, median Shopify conversion rates sit roughly in the 2.5 to 3.1% range, with strong DTC brands reaching 3 to 4.5%. Averages mislead, though: rates vary hugely by category, price point, traffic mix, and device. A luxury store at 1.4% may be healthy, while an impulse-buy store at 2.8% may be underperforming. The benchmark that matters is your own trend line, and whether structured experimentation is moving it.
How much does a Shopify CRO agency cost?
Shopify CRO retainers typically run $4K to $15K/month depending on testing velocity, research depth, and whether the agency builds the winning variants or just recommends them. One-off CRO audits run $2K to $10K. Conversion offers a pay-on-results structure: fees track the incremental revenue our experiments generate, verified through your analytics. No flat retainer, no deck-and-dash.
How do you increase a Shopify store's conversion rate?
In priority order for most stores: fix mobile page speed (LCP under 2s), rebuild the PDP above-the-fold (price, reviews, shipping clarity, sticky add-to-cart), simplify collection page filtering, remove checkout friction (express payments, address autocomplete), add post-purchase upsells for AOV, and then run continuous A/B tests on the biggest remaining hypotheses. The exact order still comes from your data.
Can you A/B test on Shopify, and do we have enough traffic?
Yes. We run statistically rigorous A/B tests on Shopify using GrowthBook, Convert, or VWO: theme-level tests via Liquid splits, template experiments, and (on Plus) checkout extensibility tests. Every test runs to pre-registered sample sizes and significance thresholds, with no peeking and no calling winners at 60% confidence. Below roughly 30,000 monthly sessions, classic A/B testing on small effects becomes impractical, so lower-traffic stores get qualitative research, session replay, user testing, funnel diagnostics, and sequential testing of larger changes. We will tell you honestly if your traffic does not support a testing programme.
Do you optimize Shopify checkout?
Yes. On Shopify Plus, checkout extensibility (Checkout UI Extensions, Branding API, Functions) lets us add trust content, reorder fields, test express-payment placement, and run checkout upsells inside the native checkout. Checkout tests typically lift completion 5 to 15%. On standard Shopify, we optimize everything up to checkout plus cart, shipping thresholds, and post-purchase offers.
How long until CRO shows results on a Shopify store?
Quick wins (speed fixes, PDP clarity, express payments) land in the first 30 days. A/B test programs produce their first validated winners in 30 to 60 days depending on traffic. The compounding effect of shipping validated lifts month after month shows up in the P&L from month 3 onward. We report incremental revenue per experiment.
Do you do CRO for Shopify Plus stores?
Yes. Most of our CRO work is on Shopify and Shopify Plus DTC brands doing $100K to $5M/month. Plus unlocks the highest-impact experiments: checkout extensibility tests, Functions-driven offer logic, and B2B funnel optimization. We're a Shopify Plus Partner, so checkout-level testing is done in-house.
How do I choose a Shopify CRO agency?
Ask three questions that separate testing programmes from redesign shops. First, who builds the winning variant: an agency that recommends and does not ship leaves you with a backlog. Second, how do they decide a test has won: pre-registered sample sizes and significance thresholds, or calling it when the chart looks good. Third, what happens to losing tests. A programme with no losers is shipping opinions, so ask to see a test that failed and what they concluded from it.
What is the difference between CRO and a website redesign?
A redesign changes everything at once, which means that if conversion moves you cannot say which change caused it, and if it drops you cannot roll back selectively. CRO changes things one hypothesis at a time and measures each. Redesigns are sometimes necessary, when the platform or the brand has moved on, and they are frequently commissioned to fix conversion, which they cannot reliably do. If conversion is the goal, testing gets there more cheaply and with far less risk.
What does a CRO audit cover?
Quantitative analysis of your funnel by device and traffic source, a technical performance review on field data, heuristic review of the PDP, collection, cart, and checkout templates, session replay and heatmap review where available, review and support-ticket mining for recurring objections, and a prioritised hypothesis backlog with expected effect and testability. You keep the backlog whether or not you work with us afterwards.
Why do you report revenue per visitor instead of conversion rate?
Because conversion rate can rise while revenue falls. A discount banner or a cheaper default variant can lift conversion and cut average order value by more. Revenue per visitor (RPV) captures both conversion rate and AOV in one number, and on margin-sensitive tests we track profit per visitor too. Every experiment is judged on RPV, with conversion rate, AOV and add-to-cart rate as supporting metrics.
Which A/B testing tools do you use on Shopify?
We pick the tool to fit the test: Intelligems for price, shipping-threshold and offer tests, Shoplift for theme and template tests, and GrowthBook, Convert or VWO for custom and Hydrogen builds. Research runs on GA4, Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar for heatmaps and session recordings, plus post-purchase and exit surveys. We audit and fix tracking before the first test, because a test measured on broken analytics is worse than no test.
How long should a Shopify A/B test run?
Until it reaches the sample size calculated before launch, and for at least two full business cycles (usually two weeks) so weekday and weekend behaviour are both captured. We do not stop tests early because a chart looks good, and we watch guardrail metrics such as AOV, refund rate and site speed so that a winner on one metric does not quietly lose on another.
Do you need full admin access to our Shopify store?
No. We work through a collaborator or staff account with theme, apps and analytics permissions only. Variants are built on a duplicate preview theme or inside the testing app, so nothing touches your live theme until a test launches, and winners are deployed through a reviewed theme release.
Will CRO testing hurt our SEO or site speed?
Not when it is engineered properly. We build variants natively in Liquid rather than with flicker-prone client-side editors where possible, keep canonical tags and crawlable content intact on tested templates, and audit app scripts so testing does not add page weight. Speed and Core Web Vitals are tracked as guardrail metrics on every test.
Should we hire a Shopify-only CRO agency or a platform-agnostic one?
If your store runs on Shopify, a Shopify-only agency is usually faster and cheaper per shipped test, because it already knows the theme architecture, the app conflicts, Shopify Markets and Plus checkout extensibility. Platform-agnostic agencies make sense when you run several platforms or need enterprise programme management on top of your own developers. For a side-by-side of the options, see our guide to the best Shopify CRO agencies.
Do you run CRO for international stores on Shopify Markets?
Yes. We segment results by market, currency and language, because a winner in the US can lose in the UK or EU. Typical tests cover localized shipping and duties messaging, local payment methods, currency display and market-specific trust content.
Does CRO include accessibility?
Yes. Accessibility issues are conversion issues: low-contrast buttons, unlabeled form fields and keyboard traps lose shoppers and create ADA risk for US stores. Our audit flags WCAG problems on the PDP, cart and checkout path, and fixes ship alongside the experiments.
